GM recently invested $2.2 billion in an assembly plant that will be devoted to producing electric vehicles, including the recently introduced self-driving shared vehicle, the Cruise Origin.

The company made the investment at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which will be the company’s first facility dedicated to electric vehicles, according to a news release. GM’s first all-electric truck will begin production in late 2021, with the Cruise Origin following soon after. 

The facility now produces the Cadillac CT6 and the Chevrolet Impala. The plant will be closed for several months beginning at the end of February for the required renovations. 

“Through this investment, GM is taking a big step forward in making our vision of an all-electric future a reality,” GM President Mark Reuss said during a press event, according to the release. “Our electric pickup will be the first of multiple electric truck variants we will build at Detroit-Hamtramck over the next few years.”
