The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking research proposals from small companies aimed at solving nearly a dozen of its most pressing technical problems.

Of the 11 topics DOT included in the Phase 1 program, as many as half may involve, support or have implications for unmanned systems. The topics in the final solicitation are:

— Automated Detection of Broken Spike Fasteners in Wood Tie Railroad Track

— Automated Driving Systems Test Data Interface

— Automated, Drone-Based Grade Crossing Inspection

— Cost Allocation Technology for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

— Improved Condition Monitoring of Traction Motors

— Innovative, Low-Cost Methods for Concrete Bridge Deck Assessment

— In-Vehicle Highway Rail Grade Crossing Alert System

— Portable Stiffness/Elastic Modulus Measurement System

— Secure Motor Carrier Safety Data Information Exchange Using Blockchain

— Vehicle Communication via Induction Paint

— Wireless Pore Water Pressure Sensor

DOT will be working through the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) and the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

These Phase I solicitations — which have awards worth an estimated $150,000 each — were authorized under Federal SBIR programs. Those programs have been extended through September 30, 2022, as part of the 56th National Defense Authorization Act.
