Walmart Drone Delivery Takes Off with Zipline in TX

On Tuesday, Walmart and Zipline officially launched drone delivery operations at the Walmart Supercenter located at 200 US-80 in Mesquite, Texas.

The free service is now available to residents of the Mesquite area who are located within about a 2-mile radius of the store, and offers these customers the opportunity to have more than 65,000 products sold at their local Supercenter delivered in 30 minutes or less. The service will be rapidly expanding to deliver to customers beyond that area.

This launch marks the beginning of a new era of fast, precise, sustainable delivery starting in North Texas, and comes after several weeks of a successful Early Access Program to select residents of the Mesquite community, something local Walmart leaders are excited to see.

“We are thrilled that our customers will now have access to this exclusive service,” said Walmart Mesquite Store Manager Jason Kelley. “Zipline delivery will offer these families yet another way our store is helping them save money and live better.”

Zipline has been delivering tens of thousands of items on behalf of Walmart since 2021. Tuesday’s launch marks the first official Zipline launch in the DFW metroplex, which Zipline is very excited to serve.

“We’ve been blown away by the feedback from our early customers. In just a few weeks we’ve already become a part of people’s daily routines, especially for busy parents like myself, older adults, and anyone else who wants to spend more time doing things they love and less time running errands,” said Conner Wilkinson, Head of Community Engagement at Zipline. “Dallas Fort-Worth metroplex residents are now experiencing the future of delivery that will soon be normal everywhere – one that’s faster, more convenient, and magical.”

Walmart and Zipline’s delivery service offers customers a new and innovative way to get products ranging from baby wipes to birthday candles, as well as grocery items and more. People who want lunch or dinner, forget a key ingredient during their grocery run, or need diapers for their baby, will be able to get those items instantly and conveniently. And by choosing Zipline delivery, customers will keep more cars off the road, contributing to less traffic, making roads safer and cities greener.

Here’s how it works: Once an order is placed by a customer, the item(s) is packaged and loaded into an autonomous Delivery Zip. The aircraft then lifts to an altitude of around 300 feet and departs the store to a customer’s designated delivery site.

At the delivery location, the Zip hovers 300 feet in the air – about as high as a football field is long – while the Delivery Zip is lowered via a tether and gently and quietly sets the package onto the delivery area. The Zip is stowed back into the aircraft and departs for the dock at the Mesquite store. Customers who have used the service have described it as “quiet,” “gentle,” and “magical.”

Customers can check eligibility for the service (and join the waitlist) by downloading the Zipline App on iOS or Android, or by visiting flyzipline.com/texas. Once a customer is signed up for Zipline and eligible for deliveries, they’ll be able to get deliveries between 10 am – 8 pm on weekdays, and 8 am – 8 pm on weekends. On April 12th from 12 pm – 3 pm Zipline is hosting an event at the Walmart Supercenter in Mesquite where members of the community can come to learn more about the service.
