The FAA is investigating several close calls between drones and airplanes, and is underscoring how damaging and dangerous a collision would be, according to a report that aired on NBC Nightly News.

The near-misses happened in Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta in early February, and all involved small drones flying well above the 400 feet that the FAA allows. Not only shouldn’t these small UAVs be flown above 400 feet, they also shouldn’t be flown within 5 miles of an airport.

As recreational drone use continues to grow in popularity, it’s important for hobbyists to be familiar with the rules to avoid these types of dangerous situations. To help educate the public, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and the Small UAV Coalition teamed up, in partnership with the FAA, to create the ‘Know Before You Fly’ campaign last December.

Through the website, knowbeforeyoufly.org, hobbyists can learn how to safely fly small UAVs and why it’s so important to adhere to FAA regulations.
