The Italian Air Force recently ordered Piaggio Aerospace’s P.1HH HammerHead Unmanned Aerial System, a multipurpose UAS that features a variety of operational capabilities that enable it to perform a wide range of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
Piaggio Aerospace will deliver three UAS systems to the Italian Air Force in early 2016, according to a news release, which includes six air vehicles and three ground control stations. The decision was announced at IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi. The Italian Air Force is the launch customer for the P.1HH.
The P1.HH is a derivative of the company’s P.180, a fast twin turboprop aircraft that has acquired more than 800,000 flight hours over the last 20 years, according to the release.
The P1HH was designed in partnership with Finmeccanica-Selex ES, and is currently undergoing a comprehensive development and certification test flight campaign. The test flights are being conducted at the Trapani Birgi Italian Air Force base.
